Upcoming Meet - Sharks vs. Marlins

Our first official meet will be this Saturday, May 27, at the Brushy Creek pool. Be sure and allow adequate time to find the pool.

How Meet Entries Work Each Week

For all the Saturday swim meets, we assume your swimmer will be attending the meet and the Coach will enter him/her into individual and relay events. It is your responsibility to notify us if your swimmer will not be at a Saturday meet no later than Monday practice time of that week. We understand that children can get ill later in the week, but any other absences must be declared by Monday; otherwise we will expect your swimmer to show up at the meet. It is extremely disruptive to the meet program if we have "no shows". The website has a link to "Report A Meet Absence", so please use it. You can report absences in advance. We prefer to know no matter how close it is to meet day rather than to be surprised. So please communicate with us. Thanks!

Meet Timeline

6:30am - Meet Prep team arrives
7:10am - Swimmers arrive and checkin with Team Parents
8am - Meet start time

Meet Considerations: Attention Parents!

  • Brushy Creek has a new pool since the last time we swam against them. Please check the map link below for directions to the new pool!
  • The Marlins will have parking assistants to direct traffic to their parking areas. Parents will be permitted to unload in front of the pool, but will then have to proceed to the parking areas in the neighborhood. The Marlins warnt that parking outside of the designated areas will result in tickets, or possibly even towing. Please pay attention to no parking signs, do not block any driveways, and carefully review the map found on our website for directions to the pool and more details regarding parking. You may have to park a significant distance from the pool.
  • Heat Sheet will be available for download on the website on Friday by 5 pm. NO HEAT SHEETS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT THE MEET.
  • Your child needs to check in with the team parent at the time specified in the meet timeline and be prepared to start warm ups. Swimmers who have not checked inat least 30 minutes before the start of the meet will be scratched from the meet!
  • Your child is to stay in his/her age group tent during the meet or let the team parent know where s/he is going. Team parents are not responsible for finding your child to go to the ready bench to swim.
  • Please make sure your child takes home anything brought to the meet. This includes all of the child's belongings and any trash s/he makes. We need to be courteous guests and clean up after ourselves. It it not the team parents' responsibility to clean up after the kids.

Previous Meet Results

Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers that helped at the Blue and White Meet on May 12. We hope that the meet showed the new swimmers and the new parents how a meet is run and what to expect when you get there. Of course, the real meets will run much longer, but they will be just as much fun! If you still have questions about how your volunteer jobs work, contact the chairperson for that particular job.

NWSC Swimmer Eligibility Rules: Long Course Swimmers

Year-round swimmers (i.e. USA Swimming-registered) who are 12 and under need to take special note regarding NWSC "swim up" rules if you decide to continue with your year-round team for the long course season and also participate on the Sharks swim team concurrently. If your swimmer continues with year-round swimming past May 21, 2006, he or she will only be allowed to swim in the 13-14 age group (i.e. 7-8 boy swimming on another swim team outside of NWSC will have to swim events in the 13-14 Boy age group for Shark meets).

Some examples of year-round swimming clubs in our area include, but is not limited to: Gold, Capital of Texas Aquatics, Anderson Mill Torpedos, Longhorn Aquatics, Lonestar Aquatics, Cedar Park Swimming. This includes both practicing and/or attending long course meets. If you don't want your swimmer to have to swim up, you need to quit/suspend your year-round club ties starting on Monday, May 22, 2006. If your swimmer is going to swim dually on another swim team during summer league season and is 12 years old or younger, please send e-mail immediately to both Coach Chip (coach@bccsharks.org) and Denise Gimarc, the computer representative (computerrep@bccsharks.org) so your swimmer will be put into the 13-14 events for meets. There is no problem doing this, but we must know before the first meet on May 27!

Looking Ahead

Individual and Team Photo Day

There will be no swim practice on Wednesday, June 7, to allow for individual and team photos to be taken at the Balcones pool. Please have your swimmer at the pool and "photo ready" at the arrival times shown by age group. Each swimmer needs to wear this year's team suit and this year's team t-shirt. The photo time by age group is listed. Keep in mind this is just a guideline and the sessions could run longer or shorter so it's advisable to have someone stay with your swimmer and not just drop off. Please stay until age group photo is taken.

Shark Shack

Swimmers: It's Time to Turn on the Creativity! Do you have a great idea for our team t-shirt design??? It's time to start working on those drawings for our contest. This year's t-shirt was designed by Alyssa Gimarc. Her design won last year after being voted on by a majority of our senior swimmers and coaches—Way to Go, Alyssa!

Rules: You must be a swimmer, and you must plan on swimming Sharks next year—after all, you'll want to wear the t-shirt you designed! If you are an older swimmer who will be judging, you may not enter a design.

Your design must be on white 8½" x 11" paper, and it must be pen, pencil or marker. Try to use 2 colors—black will be one of the colors. If necessary, you can add a third color. Do not put your name on the drawing—that should be on a separate page attached to your drawing. You should include the words "Sharks 2007" and "BCC" on your design. You can also add a slogan just make sure it is appropriate!

Do not turn in your drawing yet—you'll be getting instructions about that later. Now is the time to start thinking and planning your amazing design!

Other Shack News: The Shark Shack will be open at all meets selling caps, goggles, and a few must-have items! Don't forget to pick up your team t-shirt if you have not already done so, and we do have a few extra adult sizes for sale!

Team Directory: The BCC Sharks Board has decided to print a team directory for each registered family. Those of you who pre-paid for a team directory at registration will be refunded. Pick up your team directory at the Shark Shack on Saturday. The directories that are not be picked up will be placed in your swimmer's ribbon folder.

Parent's Corner

Practice Reminders: No practice at Balcones Pool only on May 24; no practice on May 29 in observance of Memorial Day; no practice on July 4. The swimmers will not be swimming on June 7 due to team photos, but will need to come to the Balcones pool at the time designated for his/her age group.

Tents: The age group tents are to assure that all the swimmers have a shady spot out of the sun and a dry place out of the rain during the meet. We have enough tents to accommodate the kids in each age group. Some age groups are large and there may be room for the kids only under the tent. Parents are welcome under the tents if all of the kids are accommodated first. Several parents have purchased their own tents to use at the meets to keep their non-swimming family members out of the sun and rain. You can catch the tents on sale at places like Academy and other sporting goods stores.Thank you for your consideration.

Do not leave the meet (unless you are a 6 and under at half time) without telling a coach! Your child may be entered in a relay at the end of the meet and it may not be in the heat sheet. Ask your team parent before you leave if your swimmer is swimming any more events.

Swimmer Name on Caps: Please put your swimmer's names (first name plus last initial) on each side of their swim caps with a permanent marker. This will assist the coahes in learning the swimmer's names and will assist our team photographers (Jeff and Debbie Dean) in getting the names right for photo captions.

Swimmer Ribbons: As a reminder, swimmer ribbons are not handed out at the meet. The ribbons are available in the ribbon boxes at each pool on Monday morning during practice time. Each swimmer or parent can find ribbons in a folder under the swimmer's name. We do not leave the ribbon boxes at the pool during the week after Monday. If you miss getting your ribbons, send an e-mail to scoretable@bccsharks.org to make arrangements to get your ribbons. You can always pick them up the next Monday.

Balcones Country Club Considerations: A few reminders regarding the clubhouse facilities at Balcones Country Club. BCC Rules stipulate that any non-members, excluding Summer Swim Pass holders, must be accompanied by a Club member when inside the clubhouse. Also, children under the age of 10 must be accompanied at all times by a responsible adult when inside the clubhouse. When entering the clubhouse, you must be dressed appropriately (both members and non-members). For example, no swim suits and bare feet.

2005 Photos Still Available for Purchase: You can order photo-quality 4" X 6" reprints of any photo that appears in one of the 2005 Web Photo Albums. The price is $1 per print. Send an e-mail to Jeff Dean with the following information:

  • Your name
  • Swimmer's last name (if different)
  • Phone number
  • E-Mail address
  • Ordering details for each photo (i.e. IMG_XXX, which is found below each online photo) and quantity.

Weekly Snack Schedule

It's SNACK time!!

Friday morning snacks are a Shark tradition! All of our sharks, coaches included, enjoy snacks following Friday morning practices.

Parents are asked to take turns providing these small snacks (cookies, brownies, popsicles, donuts, etc.) for each swimmer in their child's age group. Please e-mail Joyce Marshall at hospitality@bccsharks.org to volunteer for one day of snack duty. This is a great opportunity to use the Krispy Creme Card you bought through the Sharks fundraiser - 2 dozen doughnuts for the price of 1!

We will begin Friday snacks this week.
